Why Family Therapy?

Mental health professionals in India have always involved families in therapy. However, formal involvement of families occurred about one to two decades after this therapeutic modality was started in the West by Ackerman. Mental illnesses afflict individuals and their families too. Families are generally unaware and lack information about mental illnesses and how to deal with them and in turn, may end up maintaining or perpetuating the illness too. Vidyasagar is credited to be the father of Family Therapy in India though he wrote sparingly of his work involving families at the Amritsar Mental Hospital.

Family Interventions: Basic Principles and Techniques

Family therapy is a form of therapy in which an entire family is engaged in therapy, to reach a group resolution, rather than an individual seeking out personalized therapy plans. Family therapy can be engaged when an entire family's dynamic has grown problematic or may be enlisted to help when a single family member's behavior or struggles have created familial discord. So what exactly is family therapy? Family therapy is any form of therapy that enlists an entire family as a client, rather than a single person. Family therapies can all look very different from one another, both in terms of what is worked on during therapy sessions, and the manner of delivery. Some family therapy sessions require that all family members be present during a session, while others might intentionally splice and separate family members throughout treatment. Some therapies focus on parent-child engagement and interactions, while others focus on each member of the family to treat individual concerns, before bringing the family together for treatment as a whole.

This renewed momentum comes at a crucial time in the history of psychotherapy: on the one hand, we are witnessing an accumulation of knowledge about their efficacy thanks to the growing body of scientific research in a clinical environment; on the other hand, a debate is under way in various countries — including Switzerland — on the criteria for reimbursement of psychotherapy by the health insurance funds. This debate will have a decisive impact on how the psychotherapeutic landscape is shaped in the future. It has been written according to the following principles:.

In the field of family therapy FT , theoretical and methodological perspectives coexist. This article aims to comprehend how family therapists use different theories, especially social constructionism. We describe a qualitative study, carried out through semi-structured and individual interviews with 14 Brazilian family therapists, men and women. Our analysis and discussion present four types of discourse by which the participants combine theoretical perspectives: conciliatory-constructionist, conciliatory-reflexive, conciliatory-descriptive and eclectic. We conclude that the combination of theories is an effort to enhance clinical practice, at the same time as it creates tensions in the FT field.
