Mathematics and architecture are related, since, as with other arts , architects use mathematics for several reasons. Apart from the mathematics needed when engineering buildings , architects use geometry : to define the spatial form of a building; from the Pythagoreans of the sixth century BC onwards, to create forms considered harmonious, and thus to lay out buildings and their surroundings according to mathematical, aesthetic and sometimes religious principles; to decorate buildings with mathematical objects such as tessellations ; and to meet environmental goals, such as to minimise wind speeds around the bases of tall buildings. In ancient Egypt , ancient Greece , India , and the Islamic world , buildings including pyramids , temples, mosques, palaces and mausoleums were laid out with specific proportions for religious reasons. In Islamic architecture, geometric shapes and geometric tiling patterns are used to decorate buildings, both inside and outside. Some Hindu temples have a fractal -like structure where parts resemble the whole, conveying a message about the infinite in Hindu cosmology. In Chinese architecture , the tulou of Fujian province are circular, communal defensive structures.

Fractal geometry and architecture design: case study review

In early phases of design, during the process of form-exploration, architects -- knowingly or unknowingly -- have used mathematics as their guiding tool to evolve a formal methodology of design. However, very often the designer comes across a situation where these underlying mathematical principles need to be overlapped or interfaced. Applying fractal concepts to the order can accommodate this complex diversity. The design of housing layout stands out prominently among such architectural problems and, can thus be one such instance in which fractals may be used as a design tool. Commonly seen organisational patterns in housing layout designs create rigidity and monotony, while others like clustered groups are too inconsistent and can create disorder. The research tries applying fractal ordering principles to strike a balance between these extremes by creating an orderly arrangement of houses with an underlying variation in the pattern.

Contemporary architecture tends to deconstruct modern architecture based on rationalization just like reductionism and functionalism and secedes from it. It means change from mechanical to organic and ecological view of the world. According to these changes, consideration of a compositive relationship presented variety and complexity in architecture. Thus, the modern speculation based on rationalism cannot provide an alternative interpretation about complicated architectural phenomena. At this point in time, the purpose of this study is to investigate the possibilities of the fractal as an alternative tool of analysis and design in contemporary architecture. In this study, two major aspects are discussed. First, the fractal concepts just like 'fractal dimension', 'box-counting dimension' and 'fractal rhythm' can be applied to analysis in architecture.

Written in English. Harris has succeeded in establishing the practical technique of integrating organic fractal design into architecture. Fractal geometry has often been used to study certain elements of architecture, but this is the first time that it has been used to find a new geometric pattern in the French Gothic architecture. After studying the 20 most important French Gothic cathedrals, in the preceding section of this paper, we have found the means of their respective Cited by: 2. The increasing concerns on sustainability oriented buildings have added new challenges in building architectureral design and called for new design responses. Sustainable design integrates and balances the human geometries and the natural ones. As the language of nature, it is, therefore, natural to assume that fractal geometry could play a role in developing new forms of aesthetics and sustainable architectureral design. This paper gives a brief description of fractal geometry theory and presents its current status and recent developments through illustrative review of some fractal case studies in architecture design, which provides a bridge between fractal geometry and architecture design.

Architects, when designing using fractal geometry, tend to use it aesthetically, creating decorative complex patterns which can be perceived by.

Architectural geometry is an area of research which combines applied geometry and architecture, which looks at the design, analysis and manufacture processes.
