The first counting device was used by the primitive people. They used sticks, stones and bones as counting tools. As human mind and technology improved with time more computing devices were developed. Some of the popular computing devices starting with the first to recent ones are described below;. The history of computer begins with the birth of abacus which is believed to be the first computer.

History of Computers

Introduction: A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. Nowadays, a computer can be used to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. It can also be used to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos. But the evolution of this complex system started around with the first Generation of Computer and evolving ever since. These computers could calculate in milliseconds. Disadvantages: These were very big in size, weight was about 30 tones.

The history of computing hardware covers the developments from early simple devices to aid calculation to modern day computers. Before the 20th century, most calculations were done by humans. Early mechanical tools to help humans with digital calculations, like the abacus , were referred to as calculating machines or calculators and other proprietary names. The machine operator was called the computer. The first aids to computation were purely mechanical devices which required the operator to set up the initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then manipulate the device to obtain the result. Later, computers represented numbers in a continuous form e. Numbers could also be represented in the form of digits, automatically manipulated by a mechanism.

A transistor computer , now often called a second generation computer , [1] is a computer which uses discrete transistors instead of vacuum tubes. The first generation of electronic computers used vacuum tubes, which generated large amounts of heat, were bulky and unreliable. A second generation of computers, through the late s and s featured circuit boards filled with individual transistors and magnetic core memory. These machines remained the mainstream design into the late s, when integrated circuits started appearing and led to the third generation computer. The University of Manchester 's experimental Transistor Computer was first operational in November and it is widely believed to be the first transistor computer to come into operation anywhere in the world.

Computer Concepts - History of Computers

Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such as the monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk HDD , system unit graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard and chips , etc. The fifth generation computers introduce an improvement in semiconductor technology and Artificial Intelligence. The sixth generation of computer provided consumers with the opportunity to have more power on a smaller footprint. First generation computers used thermion values or Vacuum tubes for circuitry, magnetic drums for memory, and where often enormous, occupying entire room.

Computer generations are based on when major technological changes in computers occurred, like the use of vacuum tubes, transistors, and the microprocessor. As of , there are five generations of the computer. Review each of the generations below for more information and examples of computers and technology that fall into each generation.

It would also include discussion of mechanical, analog and digital computing architectures. As late as the s, mechanical devices, such as the Marchant calculator, still found widespread application in science and engineering. During the early days of electronic computing devices, there was much discussion about the relative merits of analog vs.
