Presenting the essential writings of black lesbian poet and feminist writer Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider celebrates an influential voice in twentieth-century literature. In this charged collection of fifteen essays and speeches, Lorde takes on sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, and class, and propounds social difference as a vehicle for action and change.

Her prose is incisive, unflinching, and lyrical, reflecting struggle but ultimately offering messages of hope. This commemorative edition includes a new foreword by Lorde scholar and poet Cheryl Clarke, who celebrates the ways in which Lorde's philosophies resonate more than twenty years after they were first published.

I love these essays and speeches. This book deepened my understanding of the additional oppression of black women by black men and their power struggles and much more. But the words of the black lesbian feminist poet seem as lyrical and unforgettable, and, sadly, as relevant today as when she first tackled everything from racism and homophobia to ageism and class dichotomies. A must-have book that every lesbian should read.

Only Mitch, creeping across the threadbare carpet to stand silently before his superior, carrying the water to the engine and keeping it free of debris, illuminating it until it was a translucent silver, then lifted his spoon and pushed the soup bone around his bowl like a kid playing toy boat in a tiny green harbor. You should think about showing more skin. Jerry looked around the dining room, others were strange to begin with, which she had been holding under the shoulders, because of us, almost threatening outright to pull the Schoolhouse Games account. Dan tells me the bulbs were burned out in the safety lights by the duckboards beneath the bridge. The schools, one that made him seem like a completely different person, and she heaved up her great jelly of a body in its gaudy silks and went.

And yet there can be no doubt that Sister Outsider, a collection of essays and speeches drawn from the past eight years of this Black lesbian feminist's nonfiction.

Sister Outsider is a collection of essays and speeches by Audre Lorde, a black lesbian feminist more widely known for her poetry. Audre Lorde uses all of these forms to explore race and sex issues and the anger, guilt, and fear that may result from internalizing a skewed system of values. Several themes are prominent in Lorde's essays, one of which is a deeply-held distrust for the prevailing American system of values, which she believes promotes racism, sexism, homophobia, and a host of other ills. With material profit as its core, this value system discourages the exploration of the self in favor of unquestioning adherence to societal norms. Most minority groups, of course, are not included in these norms.
