PREDICT: a checklist for preventing preanalytical diagnostic errors in clinical trials
Clinical trials are experiments or observations done in clinical research. Such prospective biomedical or behavioral research studies on human participants are designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioral interventions, including new treatments such as novel vaccines , drugs , dietary choices , dietary supplements , and medical devices and known interventions that warrant further study and comparison. Clinical trials generate data on safety and efficacy. Depending on product type and development stage, investigators initially enroll volunteers or patients into small pilot studies , and subsequently conduct progressively larger scale comparative studies. Clinical trials can vary in size and cost, and they can involve a single research center or multiple centers , in one country or in multiple countries. Clinical study design aims to ensure the scientific validity and reproducibility of the results.
Index Copernicus Value: ISSN Number: Journal Impact Factor: 1. Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Research ACLR is an international peer-reviewed, open access journal that provides rapid publication of articles in all areas of Clinical and Laboratory sciences. The aim of this journal is to provide a platform for scientists and researchers all over the world to promote, share, and discuss a variety of innovative ideas and developments in laboratory medicine and clinical experience to improve the quality of human and animal health. Clinical research is a branch of healthcare science that determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease.

There are those who revel in the abstract beauty of mathematics, sometimes ignoring the inconvenient habit of data to fail to conform to mathematical models. There are others who regard statistics as a form of codified guesswork and, at worst, a tool to increase the chance …. View via Publisher.
Although the importance of guaranteeing a high level of preanalytical quality in routine diagnostic testing has already been largely acknowledged over the past decades, minor emphasis is currently being placed on the fact that accurate performance and standardization of many preanalytical activities are also necessary prerogatives of clinical trials. Reliable evidence exists that clear indications on how to manage the different preanalytical steps are currently lacking in many clinical trials protocols, nor have detailed authoritative documents been published or endorsed on this matter to the best of our knowledge. To fill this gap, the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine EFLM Working Group for Preanalytical Phase WG-PRE will provide here a specific checklist for preventing preanalytical diagnostic errors in clinical trials PREDICT , especially focused on covering the most important preanalytical aspects of blood sample management in clinical studies, and thus encompassing test selection, patient preparation, sample collection, management and storage, sample transportation, as well as specimen retrieval before testing. The WG-PRE members sincerely hope that these recommendations will provide a useful contribution for increasing the success rate in clinical trials. Laboratory medicine is considered one of the most proactive medical disciplines in establishing a culture of quality throughout its rather long history since its beginnings, more than years ago [ 1 ].
Richard G. Jones and R. Bryan Payne. The authors address this book to practitioners of laboratory medicine who have limited knowledge of statistics and need guidance in understanding statistical concepts and techniques.
