Genetic engineering and allied technologies have underpinned the development of a range of pharmaceutical products of modern biotechnology, collectively termed biopharmaceuticals. Twenty-five percent of all new drugs now approved are biopharmaceuticals and some such products have gained marketing approval. Given the increasing prominence of this class of therapeutic product, it is of interest to survey the pharmaceutical biotechnology content of pharmacy curricula.

A biopharmaceutical , also known as a biologic al medical product , [1] or biologic , is any pharmaceutical drug product manufactured in, extracted from, or semisynthesized from biological sources. Different from totally synthesized pharmaceuticals, they include vaccines , whole blood , blood components, allergenics , somatic cells , gene therapies , tissues , recombinant therapeutic protein , and living medicines used in cell therapy. Biologics can be composed of sugars , proteins , nucleic acids , or complex combinations of these substances, or may be living cells or tissues. They or their precursors or components are isolated from living sources—human, animal, plant, fungal, or microbial. They can be used in both human and animal medicine. Terminology surrounding biopharmaceuticals varies between groups and entities, with different terms referring to different subsets of therapeutics within the general biopharmaceutical category. Some regulatory agencies use the terms biological medicinal products or therapeutic biological product to refer specifically to engineered macromolecular products like protein- and nucleic acid -based drugs , distinguishing them from products like blood, blood components, or vaccines, which are usually extracted directly from a biological source.

Proteins Biochemistry and Biotechnology 2e is a definitivesource of information for all those interested in protein science, and particularly the commercial production and isolation ofspecific proteins, and their subsequent utilization for appliedpurposes in industry and medicine. Fully updated throughout with new or fundamentally revisedsections on proteomics as, bioinformatics, proteinglycosylation and engineering, well as sectionsdetailing advances in upstream processing and newerprotein applications such as enzyme-based biofuelproduction this new edition has an increased focus onbiochemistry to ensure the balance between biochemisty andbiotechnology, enhanced with numerous case studies. This second edition is an invaluable text for undergraduates ofbiochemistry and biotechnology but will also be relevant tostudents of microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and anybranch of the biomedical sciences who require a broad overview ofthe various medical, diagnostic and industrial uses of proteins. The book is well written, making it informative and easy toread All rights reserved. Proteins Biochemistry and Biotechnology Walsh, Gary 2. VAT, excl.

Biopharmaceuticals, an Industrial Perspective pp Cite as. The modern pharmaceutical industry is barely years old. Amongst the most recent product types developed are the biopharmaceuticals; therapeutic substances produced by modem biotechnological techniques. Thus far, in excess of 50 such substances have gained regulatory approval for medical use. All are proteins produced by recombinant DNA technology or in the case of monoclonal antibodies by hybridoma technology. Biopharmaceuticals approved to date include blood factors, anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents, therapeutic enzymes, hormones and haemopoietic growth factors.
