Dependence is most important aspect of power. Power can exist in any form of relationship. When people in organization convert their power in action, they are said to be engaged in office politics. Some use of political behavior in an organization is ethical, as long as it does not harm anyone.

However, the misuse of power is not an effective politics. Unethical office politics increases conflicts at the workplace. Conflicts arises out of a disagreed interaction. Conflicts in organization can be due to incompatibility of goals, perceptions, disagreements, etc.

This study is about a year-old professional, Thomas Green, who was recruited in Dynamic Displays for an account executive position in the Travel and Hospitality division. After five months, Green was directly promoted to senior market specialist by Shannon McDonald, division Vice President.

Green openly challenged this at the meeting, making situation worse between them. Additionally, Green failed to maintain an effective communication with Davis. Green does not comply to what Davis says, like to update his outlook calendar constantly, to make brief report of new opportunity, and the like.

These lack of communication and differentiated work styles deteriorated the situation between the two. The division Vice President, McDonald uses legitimate power, as she makes use of her position to hire Green as a new senior market specialist, which — as per hierarchy — Davis has the power and right to hire.

Davis is also trying to make use of his position to get Green out of his position because from the start he wanted to choose his own person for this position. He is trying to rely on legitimate and coercive power. Green did not pay much attention to office politics initially, but at the end he recalled a series of events and mail and learned office politics.

McDonald sponsored his promotion, so he has taken for granted that she would watch out for him. Subsequently, he realized the office politics and wondered who McDonald would side with. The source of the problem between Green and Davis is the disagreements. These disagreements escalated conflicts between them.
