After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in , the Catholic Church became a powerful social and political institution and its influence spread throughout Europe. The contemporary Catholic Church says that it is the continuation of the early Christian community established by Jesus.

To belong to the church one must accept as factually true the gospel of Jesus as handed down in tradition and as interpreted by the bishops in union with the pope. Fundamental in this divine tradition is the Bible , its text determined and disseminated by the church. Adherents must also accept the church as possessing the fullness of revelation, and the church, according to the Roman Catholic catechism, is the only Christian body that is one, holy, catholic [universal], and apostolic.

Beliefs and practices

The idea of faith shared by all Christian churches is rooted in the New Testament. But the New Testament idea of faith is not simple; indeed, it possesses a breadth of meaning that has led to varying understandings, even within a single Christian communion. Most modern interpreters of the New Testament would agree to a description of faith as the personal knowledge of God revealing himself in Christ. Yet it is doubtful whether the post- Reformation theology of any Christian church has presented faith simply in these terms. Well before modern theologians considered the meaning of faith, Christian thinkers, beginning with St. Paul and the Evangelists, sought to explain faith.

The relationship between times of crisis natural disasters, pandemics and religious behaviour has been the subject of long debate. Theoretical models of religious coping propose that adversity caused by adverse and unexpected events instigates people to use religion more intensively. I found that gender, the type of religious practices and the frequency of pre-pandemic participation are significant predictors of religious intensification. Recent studies on religious behaviours suggest the correlation between fear and beliefs. The literature exposes two causal links: fear motivates religious faith and then the last one mitigates fear Donovan ; Ellis and Wahab ; Jong et al.

Catholic theology is the understanding of Catholic doctrine or teachings, and results from the studies of theologians. It is based on canonical scripture , and sacred tradition , as interpreted authoritatively by the magisterium of the Catholic Church. Major teachings of the Catholic Church discussed in the early councils of the church are summarized in various creeds , especially the Nicene Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and the Apostles' Creed. Since the 16th century the Church has produced catechisms which summarize its teachings, most recently in The Catholic Church understands the living tradition of the Church to contain the essentials of its doctrine on faith and morals and to be protected from error, at times through infallibly defined teaching. This developed deposit of faith is protected by the "magisterium" or College of Bishops at ecumenical councils overseen by the pope, [6] beginning with the Council of Jerusalem c. AD

The Catholic Church , during its long history, has on occasion been subject to criticism regarding various beliefs and practices. Within the Church, this includes differences of opinion regarding the use of Latin at Mass, and the subject of clerical celibacy. In the past, different interpretations of scripture and critiques of clerical laxity and opulence contributed to separations such as the schism with the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Protestant Reformation. The Catholic Church has also been criticized for its active efforts to influence political decisions, such as the Church's promotion of the Crusades and its involvement with various 20th century nationalist regimes. More recent criticism focuses on alleged scandals within the Church, particularly alleged financial corruption and the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandals.

You should with eager curiosity read those references in the Holy Bible that refer to these sacraments, reflect on them, pray with them, absorb them, and live them.
